Crashing Fashion Gallery

Monday, February, 11, 2008

Wednesday and Thursday last week, my close friend and Style Editor, Alisa Neely and I dropped in on Fashion Week in New York City. We’ve been a few times before, but this time seemed faster, busier and more exciting than ever.

The tents at Bryant Park were filled from morning to night with models, buyers, editors, stylists, fashionistas, reporters and photographers from all over the world for the Fall 2008 shows. Just being there is invigorating enough to write about, without ever even going into a show. People watching filled us with a not unfamiliar feeling that Boston is downright stuffy and boring compared to New York. But of course that’s why we were there. We went to bring the fall fashion forecast home to Boston.
The Temperley London and Vera Wang shows were definite standouts. Both designers wowed us with their artistry and innovation. At the Temperly Show we sat in the frfashion galleryont row, right across from Christy Turlington, Julia Stiles, Perry Reeves and Joy Bryant. Wow, Christy Turlington is as gorgeous as ever, and watching the waifish 15 year old models walk down the runway with barely enough energy to lift their chins up made us miss the supermodels of her era, who were proud to be strong and feminine.

Temperley and Vera Wang both played with amazing colors, textures and shapes. There were burnt orange tights under sheer evening dresses, short, billowy jackets with exquisite details on the back, high-low mixes of dressy with casual to create gorgeous surprises. Vera Wang’s show was especially glamorous, and celebrities like Anna Wintour and Andre Leon Tally from Vogue, and Mariska Hargitay were there despite the early morning start time. We both saw a ton of things we would LOVE to own. The construction and materials she uses in her ready to wear stuff are as luxurious as in her wedding gowns.

If you are looking for a trend report, here’s what you’ll see a lot of come spring:

Flowy, breezy sheers
Floral designs
Cropped jackets
Pajama inspired fashion, especially pants
Hippie chic
Wild hair
Plummage (yes still)
Natural, soft hair and makeup
Big jewelry
Orange
Chartruse
Architecture inspired contruction
Looser silhouettes
